I think you have to have lived under a rock not to know about it. However, most PEOPLE (not just women) are too caught up in tradition and 'what you should do' to even think about it at the time. Of COURSE you're getting a diamond ring; that's just what is done and expected.<br /><br />My engagement ring's stone (getting it in two weeks, woot!) is a white opal. It still has the whole symbol of purity and love thing, but none of the guilt of a diamond. I don't even really like diamonds, they're boring. But opals?
