A Second Oil Rig Has Burned In The Gulf

A Second Oil Rig Has Burned In The Gulf

Oh man, how terrible. I'm referring to my joke there. How insensitive can I be. 9/11 is just a couple of days away (See, I didn't forget! NEVER!) and I make a reference to the classic "a second plane has hit the building"

But sure enough, a second oil rig caught on fire late last week. I know, you were on your labor day weekend vacation. No worries. You have me to fill you in on the stuff you don't care about because it's not leaking oil.... or is it?
GRAND ISLE, La.—An offshore oil rig has exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, west of the site of the April blast that caused the massive oil spill.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel says the blast was reported by a commercial helicopter company about 9:30 a.m. CDT Thursday. Seven helicopters, two airplanes and four boats are en route to the site, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast.

Ranel says it hasn't been determined whether the structure is a production platform or a drilling rig or whether workers were aboard. Ranel says smoke was reported but it is unclear whether the rig is still burning.

yes. Yes! I guess the worse news about all this is that we're going to have to see the ugly faces of oil CEO exec's. God damn, they're some of the most ugliest mother fuckers around. Forget the greasy turtles and birds, watching one more of the oil CEO's on TV is by far the most offensive thing about all the spills/fires/DPK sub attack. Just look at this fucker!

It's like the excess of wealth is just sitting in his hanging chin. I mean, I know you can't trust the banks, but you don't have to hide your gold doubloon in there. So I guess the question now is if it's going to flood the water with some black ooze like the last one did....
UPDATE 12:24 EST: MSNBC and USA Today are reporting that the Coast Guard has clarified that the explosion occurred at an oil platform and is not an oil drilling rig. The platform, however, is still on fire.
Hear that? Nothing to see, folks. Says U.S coast guard, wholly owned subsidiary of British Petroleum. But then again, this update came out sometime on Friday..
NEW ORLEANS, La. (AP) -- The Coast Guard is saying that a mile-long oil sheen is spreading from the site off an offshore petroleum platform that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana.
But now they're saying there isn't any... and I just have to ask why does this all sound familiar? It's as if we should be doing the time warp again!

If you wonder if this will have any significant amount of oil pouring out of it, I doubt it. It's sort of like when you're changing your own oil, and a cop drives by while you're pouring a few quarts down a storm drain. It's just a few hundred dollar fine and wipe your hands on the matter.

Look at this dude. It's like everyone in Houston

Besides that, Deep Water Horizon was only 50 miles offshore. This one is a hundred. So if it does spill any oil, they could probably just lie about it, dump some dispersant on it at night and hope it magically goes away before any news choppers ever show up.

All we need now is someone to cue up an interview with someone with a southern drawl saying, "Yes, it's unsafe but we still must drill forever, until the end of time. Nothing will ever stop me from drilling into this earth on unsafe rigs. Nothing!"

I once read a short story where they drilled for oil with this new drill and it starts leaking blood from the ground and wont stop. Makes you wonder... But then again, I'm not some tree hugging hippie (well, not that much of a tree hugger), so that's just a bit much.

Two oil rigs down, however many more to go! Speaking of which, how many are their out there?

This map is pretty telling and interesting. You'd think they would build these things to last considering they have to withstand at least a couple hurricanes a year. Maybe even withstand an attack by North Korea...

Wait, what? Yeah. There are people that believe that the DWH oil spill was caused by an attack by a DPK sub attack. Here is the full conspiracy http://www.politisink.com/2010/06/d...ros-bp-shuffle/ I don't have just the conspiracy alone or I would have copy and pasted that, but it sure is funny to think that people actually believe this.

That country that we typically degrade as being crazy and backward has suddenly developed the ability to create a submarine so stealthy it can operate in US territorial waters without being detected. Didn't you know?

So with that, North Korea's secret submarine has sure been busy. Considering we didn't capture it after the BP oil spill, we can't really be surprised by this newest oil rig fire. It's a better twist than when they throw some empty suit under the bus instead of providing meaningful investigations and regulations.

I am waiting for when they start to blame the environmentalist themselves. It wont surprise me at all when there's some revised statement and the Mariner Energy spokesman ends up telling CNN that in addition to the 13 workers who survived the blast this time, there was another who did not make it off the platform. A 14th worker, an EPA inspector, who ends up being the source of the explosion.

You remember that movie Water World? Yeah, I'm guessing we're heading towards that future only instead of water, we're all going to be living on oil. In short - Death is certain.

Oil Solutions?

Oil Solutions?

Over the weekend BP finally claimed victory in the war against their fucked up oil pipe. You see, they plugged it in with a 4 inch pipe and are now collecting oil as it spills out of the bottom of the ocean. Here, take a look at the pipe before BP's success;

now compare that to how it was flowing out now with the new pipe on it....

What a difference a day makes! Ha. Fuck this gay planet. I mean, seriously. If I wasn't laughing right now I would be crying because I really don't know what to tell you. How could anyone claim that is a success when it looks exactly the same as it did before. Oh wait, I know what it is that makes this a success, they're finally collecting it.

Yup, the results: Hey guys, we're collecting oil again! Doesn't look like we've made a goddamn difference in the hole in the ground spewing up deadly ocean toxin and making your Gulf Coast look like a Sonic the Hedgehog level, but now we can sell you some of it in the future! Wooohoo, go us!

Let's just bring about the colossal shit storm of dead sea life and oil washing up on shores all along the Eastern seaboard as this sucker gets caught up in the loop current. I want oil blobs in those cat 4 Hurricanes to rain down upon the ignorant masses that shrug away this shit.

I just don't seem to care anymore. No wait, it's not that otherwise I wouldn't be writing this piece here. I guess I just don't expect anything to change. Of course those idiots will keep shrugging this shit away and blame Obama and the Dems for it all while electing another Republican into office who will line their pockets with big oil's money and scream about how we should Drill, baby, drill! I just want to see some natural justice rain down on these assholes. Crying faces on TV as their cities are covered in gunk, car accidents everywhere on roads slicked to the extreme. Fires rage with no end in sight as the rain itself comes down in flames.

Yes, I want to taste this destruction. I want to breath in smoke. I want it all to burn down because we really don't deserve anything nice anymore. We're children who don't know how to play with their toys and we just end up breaking it and crying when it's too late. C3PO's arm can't be glued back.

Why am I so bitter right now? Oh, let me bring you into my world of darkness. You see, there's a cap to how much an oil company has to pay out in damages to those whose lives it ruined. They've been trying to increase this cap from 75,000 to 10 billion. It's only fair, right? You ruin an entire eco system and destroy the way of life of people and a community around you, you should pay... Well, that would be if our politicians weren't so fucking corrupt or had any balls. Ours don't.
Republican Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma used procedural move to stop the bill from coming to the Senate floor, saying that raising the cap would hurt smaller drillers.

"Big Oil would love to have these caps up there so they can shut out all the independents," he said.

Baw-ha ha ha ha ha ha... I fucking love this country. I mean, I seriously can't stop laughing at this shit. Really? REALLY?! I just wonder why our country is so god damn blinded from seeing how clear this is. I mean, I must sound like a raving mad man on this subject, but there's logic to my insanity. Let's take a look at the this guy's campaign contributions.

Campaign contributions

In the 2008 election cycle, Senator Inhofe’s largest campaign donors represented the oil and gas ($446,900 in donations), leadership pacs ($316,720) and electric utilities ($221,654) industries/categories.[48]
In 2010, his largest donors represented the oil and gas ($429,950) and electric utilities ($206,654).

"Big Oil would love to have these caps up there so they can shut out all the independents," he said.

($429,950)

Yes, struggling mom and pop oilrigs would suffer if we increased these caps.. Waaaaaaah wwaaaaaaaah. I sure know that I have the god given right to use the money I have saved working as a cashier at the Gap to build my own oil platform! Why are you people against the American dream?

Who the fuck is this mom and pop oil rigging business that they're trying to protect? Even assuming this bullshit is true, isn't it still the responsible and logical conclusion to have an effective cap in place? You know.. just in case shit happens. I have auto insurance for the event that my car gets crashed into, why not make sure that these places are insured?

Not to mention that if you can't afford to pay the damages for a disaster that ruins an entire ecosystem, maybe you shouldn't be drilling and you should just get your mom and pop ass back to main street so that the nearest Wal*Mart closes you out.

If Obama wasn't a nutless coward on this subject he could handle this. It's very easy when you think about it. He just needs to tell Inhofe that the federal government wants its ten billion dollars and if inhofe wants to suck off the oil companies that bad, he could tell him that the feds will refuse to grant authorization to any new drilling in Oklahoma. The EPA and MMS is also about to get protological on every well in the state until he caves or the federal government gets its 10 billion dollars. When it comes to these companies it's the money that talks. Be it in saving some or spreading it around a little to cover up their shit storm like some cheating husband buying his gal a new ring. You see their latest token gift?
BP Awards Tourism Grants to Gulf States

BP announced grants to each of the states of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana to help their Governors promote tourism around the shores of the Gulf of Mexico over the coming months.

This is part of our ongoing commitment to help mitigate the economic impact of the oil spill.

BP is providing $25 million to Florida and $15 million each to Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

"The Gulf Coast is our home too. We are doing everything we can to plug the leak, contain the spill offshore and protect the shoreline. With the deployment of the riser insertion tool yesterday, we made important progress in containing the spill, and that will further strengthen our ability to keep oil off the shore," said Tony Hayward, BP's Group Chief Executive.

"We understand the Governors' concerns for the impact on the tourism industry, and are making funds available so that they can support the industry's efforts to provide accurate information about the state of the beaches across the region."

These grants are in addition to the $25 million grants BP announced May 5 to help each of the four states accelerate the implementation of Area Contingency Plans. The grants announced today are for the Governors to distribute as they see fit to promote tourism.

The grants BP has made to the four states do not affect BP's response to the Deepwater Horizon incident or existing claims process, but are supplemental to them.

I mean, really. What the fuck? Oh yes, let's encourage tourism to see the shores of slickness along the beaches. What kind of idiotic shit is this and who comes up with this crap? Who's going to want to visit these beaches now? They're going to be covered with oil and the slick is going to be shiny. It's not going to encourage tourism other than hippies coming here to help clean up some of the poor sea animals.

Oh, then there's the country clubs that are worried about the oil on the Keys. Just check out what these Bourgeois mother fuckers are hearing about the effects of this BP disaster on the Keys.
Dear Member,
As media coverage of the Gulf oil leak continues, you have likely heard reports of oil entering the loop current and approaching or arriving in the Florida Keys. On the evening of Monday, May 17, twenty tar balls ranging from 3 to 8-inches in diameter were found on the shores of Fort Zachary Taylor Park in Key West, a little more than 100 miles southwest of [REDACTED].

It is important to keep in mind that scientists have yet to form a consensus on whether oil has in fact reached the loop current, the amount of oil that could reach the Florida Keys or its potential affect on the Keys' marine environment. Similarly, the US Coast Guard has yet to identify the source of the tar balls found in Key West. A laboratory analysis is underway, which should confirm whether or not the tar balls derived from the Gulf oil spill. The Coast Guard will also conduct a series of shoreline and aerial surveys throughout the day to determine if additional tar balls are present in Key West.
...
In the event that oil does reach our area, all Club and Associates stand ready to assist in cleanup efforts. Regular meetings reviewing operational contingencies are held with both organizations as information evolves.
[REDACTED] continues to monitor the situation closely.
Yeah this might fuck up a bunch of rich Republicans but I don't care about them the reef and mangroves in the keys are a national treasure and... fffffffffffuck! You know what, I'm not even going to sweat it. I mean, really, don't sweat it guys. I got this....

I guess I shouldn't talk shit about dove. At least they actually donate all the soap to be used for animal clean up and it was found to be the best (and really only) good choice after a lot of experiments conducted by animal rescue groups. So that's not really just capital bullshit as usual.

Of course for the purpose, it's diluted to 1% so it takes only a few hundred of thousand little bottles a year so they're not really breaking the bank, but occasional, small gestures of decency from a company are a little better than the nothing done by the rest. At least they're not like the oil company who is drilling into vast pockets of stuff that could cause a mass extinction event.. but don't worry, it's totally cool. I swear.
The vast deepwater methane hydrate deposits of the Gulf of Mexico are an open secret in big energy circles. They represent the most tantalizing new frontier of unconventional energy — a potential source of hydrocarbon fuel thought to be twice as large as all the petroleum deposits ever known.

For the oil and gas industry, the substances are also known to be the primary hazard when drilling for deepwater oil.

Methane hydrates are volatile compounds — natural gas compressed into molecular cages of ice. They are stable in the extreme cold and crushing weight of deepwater, but are extremely dangerous when they build up inside the drill column of a well. If destabilized by heat or a decrease in pressure, methane hydrates can quickly expand to 164 times their volume.

Survivors of the BP rig explosion told interviewers that right before the April 20 blast, workers had decreased the pressure in the drill column and applied heat to set the cement seal around the wellhead. Then a quickly expanding bubble of methane gas shot up the drill column before exploding on the platform on the ocean's surface.

Even a solid steel pipe has little chance against a 164-fold expansion of volume — something that would render a man six feet six inches tall suddenly the height of the Eiffel Tower.

Scientists are well aware of the awesome power of these strange hydrocarbons. A sudden large scale release of methane hydrates is believed to have caused a mass extinction 55 million years ago. Among planners concerned with mega-disasters, their sudden escape is considered to be a threat comparable to an asteroid strike or nuclear war. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a Livermore, Ca.-based weapons design center, reports that when released on a large scale, methane hydrates can even cause tsunamis.

From what I know, which isn't a whole lot, methane hydrate eruptions like that are one of the short list of things that mass extinction groupies blame their favorite extinctions on. I know I've read something about the PT extinction being partly blamed on that. So with every pump into your tank you're playing Russian roulette with the lives of every living soul on the planet. Way to go.

Even if you strip out the doomsday elements of that article, I'm imagining that even the safer release of large amounts of methane gas from offshore drilling has got to be absolutely terrible for the greenhouse effect. You know, seeing as methane is much worse than carbon dioxide in terms of it's global warming potential. So it's pretty clear that this would be catastrophic.

And if that idea wasn't enough, remember that large amounts of methane ice is now thawing inb the arctic, and Greenland is melting at an insane rate, it melted 15 feet this year. The Arctic passage is open, We are at the point where we must kill oil companies for the planet to survive. I'll just leave you with this video.. cause really, in the long run, we're all dead. Sadly we're making sure that long run becomes a short run..

It's Almost Earth Day, Ready for the Guilt?

It's Almost Earth Day, Ready for the Guilt?

Well, it's almost Earth Day and as any good Earth day goes, it's all about the guilt you feel towards destroying this place we call home. Yes, I'm talking to you. The fine people who shit up this bright green and blue earth that I have all my shit on. Why are you gunking it up? You used to be cool... what happened?

Anyhow, on to the guilt. Let's take a look at the life of a plastic bag...

How about that. Sure seems like it goes a long way to just end up being completely trashed. So how about you do something nice for the environment this year. Say, how about buying water out of a boxed paper carton.

Boxed Water is the latest in water packaging trends from Michigan-based Boxed Water is Better. The company produces well designed milk carton style boxes for its water. The cartons are shipped unfilled and filled on demand as needed dramatically reducing transportation costs and environmental impact.

The boxed water packaging is made from up to 90% renewable resources. It features a solid white carton with the graphic design done in black creating a sharp, highly effective package design that reads "Boxed Water is Better for the Earth."

The company said the concept for the Boxed Water started with the simple idea of creating a new bottled water brand that was more environmentally responsible and gives back a bit - they found that it shouldn't be bottled at all, but instead, boxed. So they looked to the past for inspiration in the century old beverage container and decided to keep things simple, sustainable, and beautiful.

Boxed Water is Better says their carbon footprint is dramatically lower as the boxes are shipped flat to their filler and filled only as demand is created, opposed to most bottled water companies that ship their empty bottles across the globe to be filled, then shipped back for consumption.

As a comparative example the flat, unfilled boxes they can fit on 2 pallets, or roughly 5% of a truckload, would require about 5 truckloads for empty plastic or glass bottles.

Their cartons can also be broken down to their original flat state, are recyclable in most areas, and will be everywhere shortly. We're also giving 20% of our profits back to the resources our product is composed of - water and trees. Not only does it simply make sense, but we really enjoy supporting water and forestation organizations as it's part of our company's ethos and way of thinking to give back and participate. All that and an over-arching focus on simple and beautiful design that compliments our brand as well as the spaces it's sold and consumed in.

I'm one that would suggest that you go out and buy a SIGG water bottle and just use that. You never have to throw anything away nor do you have to even settle for a certain percentage being recyclable. Hey, it's better than plastic bottles. Then again, anything is better than wasteful plastic bottles. Come on, buying a SIGG bottle really is the best thing you can do for the environment if you have water on the go.

Here Comes The Sun.... Chips

Here Comes The Sun.... Chips

Whenever I think of chips I generally think of Doritos because those are one of my weaknesses. If I have just one nacho cheese Doritos chip I'll finish the god damn bag. So I try not to have them all that often. I really shouldn't eat those while I attempt to lose weight, like the rest of the country does leading into Summer.

That's why when I think of a healthy alternative to chips, I think Sun Chips. How could you not look at them and think that they are the healthier option. They must really be good with their marketing department. Now I guess I could add one more reason why I would buy Sun Chips when I'm at the market and the option of chips comes up.. Because they're good for the environment.

You see, Sun Chips now come in a nice compost friendly bag. It's a new packaging that allows them to just melt into the environment. Here, check out the ad for it;

Pretty neat idea, don't you think? Now when I go on a picnic I can feel even more connected to the environment by at least not having something that will ruin the area I'm enjoying. Though there's no promises that it wont ruin my body. They may be the healthier alternative, but they're still unneeded fat causing devices.

But it's nice to see this sort of responsibility from a company. It's nice to think that junk food isn't unhealthy for everything that it touches. These bags will break down and not be a complete mess in the ground. Though I have one major complaint about them. That is that they're extremely loud.

Yes, these are extremely loud. I mean, really, really loud. Just touching them at the market should give you the tip off that they are when the people in the next isle over are trying to figure out what all that crumpling sound is.

I'm not even joking, these bags are really super loud. Which is sort of a reason why I don't think I would like to buy them for every instance. I sort of want to be able to hear the other person I'm talking to at a picnic instead of hearing the crumbling and fumbling of the bag of chips. Not to mention movie theaters. How the hell am I suppose to sneak this into a screening of something to avoid buying overprice shit at the concession stand if every inch they move gives their sneaky spot away?

Someone should have thought of these negative factors before they just ran off with the idea that the plastic breaks down easily. It seems like one of those mistakes like dropping peanut butter in chocolate and coming up with an amazing combination. What's the good of chips if you can't really carry them around without causing such a loud sound? It may not be pollution in the form of plastic on the ground, but what you are doing is causing noise pollution of the worse kind with these chips.

But it does raise a good question. Isn't the fact that you're advertising these bags as completely compostible actually encouraging people to just litter? I mean, yeah, under the correct compost preparation they will break down and not be totally destroy the are you dump your trash in, but how many people actually have compost heaps?

The real thing they should be advertising is how long it will take to break down in an actual real world situation, like say, in your regular local dump. I think we shouldn't be letting people in on the fact that something can break down so easily. They'll think they're already doing enough and not go that extra step and make sure that they really are doing all they can do.

It's easy to see in this study on what happens when you allow people to think they are already doing enough for the environment.
PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans are less worried about each of eight specific environmental problems than they were a year ago, and on all but global warming and maintenance of the nation's fresh water supply, concern is the lowest Gallup has measured. Americans worry most about drinking-water pollution and least about global warming.

Over time, Americans' concerns about environmental problems have generally declined. After this year's drop, for six of the eight items, the percentage who worry "a great deal" is at the lowest point Gallup has measured, which in some cases dates to 1989. The two exceptions are global warming (low point was 24% in 1997) and maintenance of the nation's fresh water supply for household needs (35% in 2001).

One major reason Americans may be less worried about environmental problems is that they perceive environmental conditions in the United States to be improving.

The decline in worry over time has been rather dramatic for some of these threats. For example, in 1989, 72% of Americans said they worried a great deal about pollution of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Worry about this environmental issue averaged 62% in the 1990s, 54% in the 2000s, and is 46% today

So it seems that when we do good for the environment, then we're less inclined to do any better because we're already doing something.. sadly that something is just not enough. It's a little sad to see that concern about climate change has gone up, but I think we'll gradually see that dropping away as politicians lose interest and the public returns to the serious issues.. like who is on the next season of Dancing with the Stars.

It should come to no surprise that green products make us less concerned about the environment. It's already proven that green products make us less kind to each other.

Hell, it's already proven that green products make us less kind to each other.

Do Green Products Make Us Better People?, a paper in the latest edition of the journal Psychological Science, argues that those who wear what the authors call the “halo of green consumerism” are less likely to be kind to others, and more likely to cheat and steal. Faced with various moral choices – whether to stick to the rules in games, for example, or to pay themselves an appropriate wage – the green participants behaved much worse in the experiments than their conventional counterparts. The short answer to the paper’s question, then, is: No. Greens are mean.

The authors, two Canadian psychologists, came up with an intriguing explanation for this. “Virtuous acts,” they write, “can license subsequent asocial and unethical behaviour.” It’s the yin-yang theory of psychology, or “compensatory ethics”, to give it its proper name

Ha ha! We just can't win. No matter how far we try to run from it, the ugly truth is that human beings are just plain and simply awful people. Completely and utterly awful in every way possible. Let's just burn it all down till it's nothing but ashes and dust. Fuck this world, or at the very least fuck us! We can't live together. We're like a broken relationship where neither party wants to call it off and right now Earth is simply trying to turn off the gas and electric so that we'll die of global warming.

But hey, at least after we're all dead there wont be a single proof of Sunchips for the future advanced civilized creatures to dig up and wonder what exactly our diet consisted off. Fuck those future selves.
