Conan The Destroyer

Conan The Destroyer...

Of your funny bone. I mean, he was one of those funny entertainers, I mean, just seeing Conan interact with Jon Stewart and Colbert was amazing and this Tuesday, and given that we didn't get new conan on the tonight show last night, it's the first day that I really don't care about Late Night Television. I mean, I look forward to September, but the only thing that has me remotely interested is Craig Ferguson. With Conan gone.. late night just feels a lot emptier.

So here's a little fix for you, these are some of the best Conan sketches that I've seen in the long history of the late night and tonight show. If you know anything about me, you'd know that I love puppets. Especially muppets, which are a mixture of Mop and Puppet.

So muppet faces of death is great

Here's a clip of when he showed up on Andy Rictor controls the Universe as the asshole boss

This one takes me back to my younger days.

Yes, I thought it was funny at the time. I still do.

Who can forget the classic desk driving?

Oh those German game shows

Hey, it's a certain other NBC star as a sketch character

Max and Conan go out for a beer

M.C. Hammer on the loose!

Ahhhh.. Walker Texas Ranger lever

Annnnnd more

9 minutes of wacky channel surfing

Ah... Christmas in New York

Apartment hunting can be hard

Trucker School

You want shoes?

Who doesn't want to see a giant red head learn how to pole dance?

Possibly the best combination in the world. Space Ghost with Conan...

God damn, I love this stuff. Part II

And there you have it. See you in September, Conan!

The Set-Up Man Moves On... Good Bye Ed McMahon

The Set-Up Man Moves On... Good Bye Ed McMahon

This morning Ed McMahon passed away at age 86. While he passed away around family at Ronald Reagan Hospital, it's still very sad that his last year or so was such hell for him and his family. Breaking his neck in a fall and going bankrupt, it wasn't a great year for him. So let's take a few moments to look back at Television history.

I guess the real trick now is that you see him at your door with a check for $10 million, just assume it's a ruse or that he's death trying to get in your door. In fact, his later years were filled with side gigs. The New York Lotto has been running these ads for a while now

Scary that there's two dead people in that ad now. But a bucks a buck, right? Even if it's trying to push shit like Cash4Gold:

That was one of those last minute rushes to save his ass from total financial meltdown. Hell, for a while there he was about to be bailed out by Donald Trump. Is there any less dignified way to go? Well, I'm sure you can ask David Carradine about that... Now that's not a way to go out. Choked to death while getting off tied up and stuff. Compared to Carradine, Ed went out like a man.

I do wonder if they'll bury in a hermetically sealed jar on Funk and Wagnall's front porch. But that's a joke that goes back to the old tonight show days. You youngin's may not get it.

But speaking of ways to get taken out.. I suppose dying bankrupt was a good thing. Hell, I'd rather die broke as all hell after making massively big bucks. That means he had it all and he blew it all on things that made him happy. Fuck the family fighting over my millions, I want to use it all before I go out! He took it all with him. Now that's dying his own way!

But I have to say Bye-ooooh to you, Ed. You're saying Hey-ooooooH to the angels right about now. Don't worry folks, there's gold toilets and night shows galore where he's going off to.... and no creditors, no creditors at all...

The Tonight Show..

The Tonight Show..

I can't say I've ever really been much of a fan of Jay Leno. His humor has always been something that appeals towards the early bird. The old couple who just stayed up slightly late or had an extra cup of coffee with dessert and can't fall asleep after the local news crowd.

I've even come across him a couple of times. Often at car shows or just driving around. He's a sucker for taking weekend drives and I've oddly enough pulled up next to him in one of his old cars and motorcycles very often. It's not a rare sight to see him around Burbank. He'd always pop up at the Bob's Big Boy on Friday nights to show off one of his many cars.

At a young age I stayed up late for no real reason, well past Leno's late night time slot, a time slot he beat out David Letterman for and caused an all out Late Night war over. The two didn't really do much for me. No, I liked my comedy a bit more amateurish. So that's why I would always watch Late night with Conan.

From the very start I picked up his very strange sense of humor. It was a lot better than the Chevy Chase show and even though Arsenio Hall had the future President playing sax, I stuck with the awkward duo of Conan and Andy.

Wait, You must be asking yourself why a young kid would be doing up so late. I never was one to go to sleep and the bed time in my household... well, let's just say I watched a lot of late night things and it wasn't a hands on parenting going on.

But with tonight being the last of Leno's role on the Tonight Show, I have to say, he does have one hell of a strong work ethic. Aside from doing his late night gig, he doesn't even touch the money he makes from doing The Tonight Show. He's been living off his paycheck from doing random comedy gigs on the side for some time now. Which is a bit surprising that even though he has this nightly job that he'd be doing the odd jobs for his bread and butter.

Tonight's guest on the show is none other than Conan himself. In a sense, this is the passing of the torch. While I'm not a regular viewer of Leno's old person type of humor, I will be tuning in tonight. Especially since Conan hasn't been on the televsion waves for a good couple of months.

All this time that Conan has been off the air, they've been making him a new set on the Universal Studios lot. So he'll be close to the actors on set. That should give him a leg up on the competition when it comes to booking a late night guest that needs to plug their project. His new studio is a change from Lenos in many ways. Mixing around where the band plays to where he comes out to a more Johnny Carson fashion.

The new Tonight Show set up.

Jokes have been mentioned about using the Jaws doll to do color commentary every now and then as a recurring gag. Which, I would say, would be a good use of that old attraction that hasn't had the spotlight put on it since Mallrats over a decade ago.

If you're a fan of Conan, you'd be inclined to give this a read through which details Conan's Move to Southern California.

Some of the highlights that I found were:
Above a shelf full of awards for writing hung a large cork bulletin board. The board, which was once devoted to blue index cards denoting guests and comedy bits scheduled for “Late Night,” had been colonized by a battalion of yellow index cards, on which were written ideas for “The Tonight Show.” The suggestions, most of them for remotes, offered glimpses of a new mentality:
“Conan as car valet,”
“Conan as Mexican-wrestling star,”
“Conan cleans pools,”
“Conan goes canoeing on the Los Angeles River.”

Most of the ideas utilized the notion of O’Brien as an outsider, alien to the ways of Hollywood. “Conan takes a cheerful spin on the ‘Psycho’ set,” read one card; “Conan tries to be a stunt man,” suggested another. “Conan has 2,318 dollars and tries to get in on the California bailout.”
Oh man, I would watch the hell out of all those. ideas

With the change I have to wonder what exactly I'm going to do late nights now. I mean, I have no reason to stay up past 12:30 since I hate Jimmy Fallon and think his run of Late night has been awfully unfunny so far.

Makes me wonder if I'm not getting old myself. Have my days of staying up late for no good reason come to an end? What's next? Will I settle down and start some family? Nah, not yet. I still have a lot of stupidity in me left to use. Though I'm sure I'll just piss away the 11:30-12:30 slot watching and laughing at Conan. That's when I'm not at a taping.

Late Night War

Late Night War

I like to think that my handle only pays tribute to the show that caused my strange personality. But in more senses than one it rings true. Television is a funny business. Being apart of it for all these years I have seen my share of strange business moves. Cancellations of shows that, while I did not like, I understood from a business stand point had to be done. Networks pull themselves out of the ground and make names for themselves. Others dropping off the nelison ratings board. But nothing is as strange as the move I saw NBC take.

In 2009, with fear that Conan's contract ending and the idea that he would jump ship to another network to have his own "Tonight show" time slot, NBC made the deal that Conan would replace Leno as the host of the Tonight show. Leno would waddle his way back to his car fixing and that would be that. The passing of the torch to the new class. Not going to happen.

Leno, not pleased with being pushed out signed a new deal taking all the power away from Conan. He must have talked to some serious heads at NBC and threatened to start up a new late night talk show at the rival networks because he one upped the situation and caused a world of hurt here.

In a surprise move, Jay Leno is taking over the 10 p.m. slot weeknights on NBC.

The move is a huge coup for NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker, who has long said he wanted to keep both Leno and his replacement, Conan O’Brien, in the NBC family.

The move would be a cost-effective manner in which to essentially cut down the amount of hours it must program with fare from the entertainment division.
The move would also bring to an end a potentially messy transition in the coming year that had industry speculation centered on Leno potentially moving to ABC, which would set up a three-way brawl for the dwindling late-night dollars between Leno, O’Brien and CBS’s David Letterman.

Leno’s start date is undecided, but expected to be by next fall.

Leno takes over the 10pm prime time slot five days a week. This is some crazy news. Not only does it mean that the big move that Conan was going to make is moot now, as the current line up simply moves up an hour, but it also means that the talent pool for Conan's future Tonight show is going to be fighting for guest to fill up the slot.

Conan is moving his production out to Los Angeles. While in New York Conan doesn't face the same situation that if someone is going to try to promote their show/film/etc, they're going to want to do it when the most people are watching. Prime time. So Conan's guest pool is going to get smaller and smaller.

Same reaction, buddy. Same reaction.

Add in to this whole mess that now Jay Leno is in the 10pm time slot. That's prime real estate in the television industry. While Fox and CW have given up original programing, only CBS, ABC and NBC were still fighting hard for those ratings. Leno essentially canceled five prime time programs with that simple move. As if it was a terrible thing when you think about how much NBC will be saving by not having to produce anything original for the ten o'clock hour while still paying Leno a much smaller fee than it takes to make an episode or two of those new shows.

This is a serious power play and if I was Conan right now, I'd be re-reading my contract to see if there's any way out of this. It's not what he signed up for as he was expecting to be the face of the tonight show. By the time the tonight show comes on, all those who watched the Leno era tonight show won't bother to stay up and watch the new show. Way to go and eat away at your potential viewers, NBC.

Websters Definition of TOOL

This isn't much of a surprise. To be honest, NBC went from being rated #1 to what they are currently. Firing massive amounts of employees, killing a lot of the creative TV shows and just going red tape happy in killing anything and everything they could possibly in some effort to try to regain viewers.

With all this news it is hard to pay attention to the fact that Jimmy Fallon is taking over Conan's spot as late show host. How the fuck did this happen? At least one person will be laughing at his jokes... himself. The man annoys me. Even more confusing is how he got The Roots to be his house band.. Either way, looks like the late night tool Carson gets some company before being replaced with ol' Jim here.

It certainly is some WeirdTV.
